My Opinion on Abortion

Libby Lawrence, 10/2020

It’s really simple. Provide education and access to birth control. Make the conversation unnecessary. Then women only have to make the horrible choice in cases of incest, rape, or health emergency. The responsibility of that decision lies only with the mother. It’s her body. Make no mistake, a Pro-Choice person is not “pro-abortion” — what monster would be? Make it illegal and abortions will keep happening, as they have throughout human history. The only change is that a lot more women die. Not only that, but millions of unwanted children will be destined for a life of poverty, abuse, desperation, suffering, and crime.

There are dozens of lists on the internet comparing “pro-life” and “pro-birth” but my favorite is from Sr. Joan Chittister:

“I do not believe that just because you are opposed to abortion, that makes you pro- life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if you want a child born, but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.”

Abortion is a dog-whistle issue intended to rile up political passions. It’s amazing how many people rant and rave about the poor unborn babies, but their outrage doesn’t include children in cages, children who don’t have enough to eat, children who don’t have stable homes or families, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and many other issues. Conscious, suffering PEOPLE are not the issue, they are someone else’s problem, and no tax dollars should go towards helping them. Abortion, for many, is just a way to be outraged and show that they are a “good christian” without actually having to do anything at all.

And the Pro-Lifers always say “God wants” abortion to end. Have they READ their Bible??? Have they even opened it?

Numbers 5: 15-22 instructs Priests how to abort a fetus when a husband suspects that his wife may have been unfaithful. It’s referred to as “Sotah” or the Ordeal of Bitter Water. Cheat on your husband, get pregnant, and God kills the fetus. There are exactly ZERO passages in the Bible that say abortion is wrong. Not a single statement. So if you are basing your “God wants” on your “Holy Book” then you should stop.

If your argument is that from a simple, obvious, moral human viewpoint, abortion is evil, most people agree with you. No need to invoke a deity. Make abortion unnecessary.
